Question: How to build a solar-powered water heater in simple steps?

I've heard of this device before and was curious about it. It seems like a good invention in a time of economic downfall and instability.

The details are complicated, requiring thermostats and heat exchangers that differentiate the solar heated water temperature and the storage tank temperature so as not to transfer the heat backwards. But for the absolute basics, black painted radiators will heat up from the sun, this can then be used directly.

The simplest way is to put some water in the sun. There are many ways, look at old Mother Earth News. The ones from the 70s is best. I made a solar shower by painting a 55 gal drum green and putting on a high(6') stand with a shower head on a on/ off valve. It worked great.
