Is it a problem if the hot water outlet on my water heater is always hot?
I had my house checked for natural gas leaks. The tech said the problem might be my water heater. He said first thing in the morning to feel the hot water outlet on the top of my water heater and if it was warm there was probably a problem with my water heater. Anybody know what he's talking about? There aren't any obvious leaks so I don't want to pay a plumber if I don't have to.

20 gallon electric water heater. i replaced the element and a week later, the element isn't working.?
I have a 20 gallon compact electric water heater for my apartment of one resident. i replaced the element. then a a week later, no hot water. i went to home depot, got a tester. I tested the thermostat and there was continuity. Checked the element and there was no continuity. How could the element go bad so quick. i didn't turn the water off when i changed the element and i didn't drain it either so the tank was full when i changed the element. so the element was submerged in water before the power was on. the tank is 120v. i got the element that's 2000w.not sure what else to do. also, my tank doesn't seem to have a drain valve. how do i drain the tank?reply to mark i turned off the the power. removed the wires to the element. unscrewed the element. water started to pour out where the element was like crazy. i took the new element screwed it in. put the wires back on the element. and turned the power back on. about a minute, no more than 2 minutes passed when the water was pouring out. the tank was not drained to the bottom. i did wait for the tank to fill though before i turned the power on.

Apartment water heater noise?
I've been having water heater problems. I live in an apartment, 3 floors and I live on the third floor. The water valve, in my apartment, that leads to my water heater is frozen on open position, can't turn it. Under the apartment, there is a water lever that stops the water for that certain stack that stops the water on all three floor, for that stack. Each stack has it's own water lever. My water heater hasn't been working for a year. Though I've had this water heater for a year. The element would go bad after 3 months then stop. Then I'd get the element replaced again after 3 or so months and the element is bad. I just installed an element 2 weeks ago and it lasted one week.So currently I'm not using any hot water. But when I'm not using ANY water. Sometimes I can hear my water heater making a hushing noise if I put my ear to it. Like a faucet that's running. Then stop. Like I wouldn't even turn on the water in my place all day, then my water heater would make that hushing noise, as if water is being moved in it. I feel like if my neighbor is using their water, my water heater makes water noisse like it's filling or something then when they stop, my water heater stops making any noise. Is it possible that the plumbing in the apartment is where my neighbors, the ones below me can influence my water heater. The complex doesn't have a water pump so the water flow goes from the top floor then down to the bottom floor.I've lived in my apartment for 5 years and has always had hot water problems. For some reason I feel like the water is being using from my water heater when I'm not using it. Especially when I'm not using any water and I can hear my water heater.it's an electric water heater. i turned the breaker off so no power is going through it. and i'm not turning any faucets to hot. but my heater still has noise as if it's filling or something.

What the heck is wrong with my water heater?
I have to relight it over 10 times a day. Everytime I go to use hot water. I have contacted my landlord several times but he comes out and replaces little parts but it never fixes.
My gas hot water heater not maintaining temperature over long periods of non-use?
It's been slowly getting worse, now it's getting to the point where over a day the water will barely be hot enough to run the kids' showers in the evening. Overnight is worse, it's often not quite hot enough for a shower first thing in the morning. If I run hot water for a bit do dishes, wash laundry, etc then it " wakes up" and is fine... for a few hours. Then same thing starts up. We were gone for the weekend and it was barely warm enough for a shower when we got home last night.
Water heater thermostat or element?
I have a 120v 20 gallon GE compact water heater. single element. Ok so I changed my element but a week later it stopped working. the thermostat reset button won't click in place when the power is on. i saw a diagram of a 240v and a 120v thermostat and it's wired like the 120v thermostat. i'm rechecking the wiring and it seems to be in place how it should be. i know it's different wiring for a 120v thermostat and 240v. but some of the screws aren't on the thermostat to wire it like a 240v thermostat.what else should i do.
