Donald, re-read the question, Long says the BURNER flame goes out in 10 seconds, not the pilot. You only hold the red button down to keep the PILOT flame burning, not the burner flame. Long, I encountered a similar problem about a year ago, when a customer had done his own installation of a new water heater and couldn't get two fittings on the top to stop leaking. He said he tried and tried, but they continued to leak, not a lot, just enough to be annoying, for me, a single drop is annoying, but apparently not to him as he had called the job good for the day and went about his other things. By the time he called me because the igniter would light the burner, but the burner would only stay on for several seconds before closing down, the water had filled the lower portion of the tank's shell and it was dripping out onto the floor. When I got there, got the backstory and started in on the job, I first repaired both of the line leaks, then had to completely dry out the inside of the unit and put the metal door back onto the shell so that it could all work as intended, and had the same result. Burner ignites fine, burns about 5 - 10 seconds and goes off, time after time. I finally had to call the 800 number on the heater and ask one of their service managers what the problem might be. His first question was, have the igniter lines that go through the steel door been wet? , to which I had to answer "Yes ". He promptly told me that I would have to take the door out, take the metal grommet that held the lines for the pilot flame and put a hair dryer in on the lines for about 10-15 min.'s. He said that the lines, being wrapped in nylon type insulation, once wet, hold that moisture until it dries by evaporation or by heat. The insulation causes a transferrence of electrical signal between lines and you get what we had, burner on for a short time and then out, time after time. So, I did as he said, even though I thought it probably wouldn't get us anywhere, and Shazam, we had fire, and the burner continued to burn and burn and burn. In effect, he was right. So, If anyone has done anything to this unit that may have cause the pilot area to get wet, then it has to be dryed out, completely before it will function normally. |
