Water heater spewing water at the top?

Question: Water heater spewing water at the top?

(Posted by: Dragos on 2010-03-06 13:48:23)

I have a gas water heater that started spewing water at the top of the tank, at the center. I turned its water intake off and it stopped, but it restarts doing it as soon as I turn the water intake back on. Model is Kenmore Power Miser 5. Thanks in advance for any ideas. I'd like to know if this is something I or a professional can fix or do I need to replace the whole thing? I am covered under the Appliance Service Plan offered by my utilities company. They just came over, looked at it and said that it needs to be replaced. Never even touched it - seems strange.

Your hot water tank is leaking and must be replaced. You can do it yourself. Go to the hardware store and buy one and an install kit. Takes about 1 hour to do.

Its not fixable - you must replace. I'm surprised that your ASP doesn't explain it better to you. Call your gas company and ask them to come out and turn off the gas - just to the water heater, and then go to sears or someplace and order a new water heater. When the seams in the old water heater burst - only taking it completely apart will accomplish the fix. (must be welded from the inside) There is a anode rod that can be replaced - its' to reduce scale and calcium becoming loose and going through your plumbing pipes. This Rod is about 3 or 5 inches from the main water inlet at the top of your heater. It is replaceable - but you describe a problem at the middle of your tank - where water enters - that means the seams are broken. Good Luck!

It's leaking in the flue. You can see it and hear it. DUH.

Your boiler is priming. It is overheating which causes the water in the boiler to expand so much that it is being forced into the water tank. Possible faults can be the boiler pump has stopped, or the boiler stat is faulty. If your top tank is plastic, boiling water can distort it.
