Question: Has anyone had trouble with a whirlpool hot water heater?

Whirlpool does not actually make water heaters. Whirlpool has their name put on the units as well as other companies.

Whirlpool has NO business in the hot water heater market. Appliances yes, water heaters no. I've heard of them but I think they were a breif test market thing they did. And not to sucsesfully I might add. If it is more than 5 yrs. old and it is giving you fits, I suggest you replace it with an AO smith or bradford white and relax for at least twenty years.
