If it has a standing pilot your thermocoupler is out..otherwise it may be an electronic igniter..both easy enough to replace and buy

Clean or replace the pilto assembly. These can be purchased for under ten bucks. If that does not work then the gas valve is bad, that simple. Gas valves are very expensive if over 6 years replace the unit all together.

Get a decent gas fitter to it, you could waste money looking at thermocouples (if it has one), pilot assemblies and gas valves. A good engineer will tell you in two minutes. I would not replace a unit before ten years (as manufacturers reccomend) if it has not been used excessively.

Gas hot water heaters have what is called a thermacouple (spelling lol) that tells the unit that pilot is lite and ready. If pilot does not stay on then you need to change that thermacouple. It looks like a little copper tube real small and has a big end where pilot lite fire contacts it. They are easy to change out and does not cost an arm and leg lol. Maybe something like 5 dollars.
